Products Used

1 x 200kVA Generator and a 2000 litre Fuel Tank

Based on the site of an iconic cinema that dates back to 1910, the new building will honour this heritage with a multi-use development that retains the cinema theatre, along with 11 luxury residential apartments plus a range of retail units. The site sits on an 800m2 footprint on the corner of King’s Road and Old Church Street. It is due for completion in 2020.

The Challenge

This was a very challenging project as the site had restricted space and the contractor needed to adhere to a strict time programme. VolkerFitzpatrick was seeking a Generator around the final build and it needed to be located in the basement. This posed a challenge in itself as the basement was being used as part of the construction area and VolkerFitzpatrick needed to ensure safe operation and access to the unit without disruption to the programme timings.

A further logistical challenge was to provide an additional fuel feed from ground level down to the basement, as the fuel truck was unable to gain access to where the Generator and Fuel Tank were to be located. Exhaust extraction equipment was also required, as over the period of the build, the Generator would become semi-enclosed, therefore restricting ventilation and extraction.

The Solution

Mather+Stuart Power Solutions came to site and recommended the use of a 200kVA Generator in conjunction with a suitable exhaust extraction kit to ensure the fumes were effectively and safely removed from the basement area. The refuelling strategy was also discussed in detail and it was decided that the best way forward was for Mather+Stuart Power Solutions to supply and install an external fuel telemetry and street level refuelling point.

An additional fuel line from ground level to the basement, along with on-board telemetry, ensured that readings could be provided to the driver when refuelling to indicate when the tank was full.

The Results

A safe and reliable power generation solution has been provided by Mather+Stuart Power Solutions, despite the space restrictions on-site. The client is able to refuel safely and exhaust fumes are being controlled and extracted safely.

“Mather+Stuart Power Solutions have been very successful in ensuring we have had uninterrupted power supply to our tower crane and no disruption to the contract programme. We couldn’t be happier. The service provided went over and above just the supply of a standard Generator.”
